Why Is Time Travel Suddenly Everywhere on Joe Rogan?

Time travel has become a surprisingly recurring subject on The Joe Rogan Experience. Over the past several months, Rogan has discussed it with scientists, academics, politicians and comedians, ranging from serious questions about the nature of time to much more speculative ideas about UFOs, future humans and alleged time travelers.

That doesn't mean Rogan—or the people appearing on his podcast—have established that time travel is real. But the conversations are interesting because they span several very different levels of speculation.

The Scientist Who Thinks UFOs Could Be Future Humans

One of the most direct discussions came in December 2025, when Rogan interviewed biological anthropologist Michael P. Masters.

Masters has developed what he calls the extraterrestrial hypothesis: the possibility that some beings interpreted as extraterrestrials could actually be humans from Earth's future who have developed the ability to travel through space and time.

It's an unconventional hypothesis, but Masters isn't presenting it merely as science fiction. He has written books developing the idea and has attempted to construct an argument around anthropology, human evolution and the characteristics of reported UFO encounters.

The important caveat is that this remains a speculative hypothesis. There is no established evidence demonstrating that UFOs are future humans.

Then Came the Viral "Time Traveler" Theory

In May 2026, Rogan and comedians Shane Gillis, Mark Normand and Ari Shaffir discussed a completely different kind of time-travel claim.

Her response wasn't to declare the experiences genuine; instead, she emphasized the distinction between having a profound experience and having something that can be scientifically demonstrated through a repeatable experiment.

That distinction may be the most important one in the entire discussion.

Time Travel Is Not One Single Claim

When people say "time travel," they're often talking about completely different things.

According to established physics, traveling into the future at different rates is already real. Relativity predicts—and experiments have confirmed—that clocks can run at different rates depending on velocity and gravitational conditions.

Traveling backward through time is a much more difficult proposition. Physics contains mathematical solutions and speculative possibilities involving things such as wormholes and unusual spacetime geometries, but having a mathematical possibility is not the same thing as possessing a working time machine.
